Welcome to the City of the
Angels! The Los Angeles City
Historical Society cordially
invites all historians, history
buffs, and curious folks to
attend the Annual Meeting of the
Conference of California
Historical Societies on June
26-29, 2008.
The meeting will be
headquartered at the Los Angeles
Athletic Club in the heart of
downtown Los Angeles. LAAC is a
private club in a 1920s era
building. It has an art gallery,
spacious guest rooms, excellent
meeting rooms, and guests have
use of the athletic
facilities—pool, courts,
exercise equipment, etc. Parking
is connected to the building and
validated parking is extremely
low. In keeping with the fact
that this is a private club
there is a “business casual”
dress code for the dining rooms
and meeting rooms-no shorts,
tank tops, etc. Full American
breakfast is included in the
room rate. The LAAC management
even has a welcome surprise for
each room!
Our program will begin on
Thursday afternoon with
registration and an evening wine
and hors d’oeuvre reception.
Dinner will be “on your own”,
either in the hotel itself or
one of the many nearby
restaurants. Olvera Street is
just a short ride on the subway
or by car for those wanting
Mexican cuisine.
Friday will begin with the RVP
meeting over breakfast and then
we will be off on our day’s
activities. Our first stop will
be Exposition Park where we will
be hosted by the California
African American Museum for two
interesting programs. Registrar
Drew Talley will talk about the
art of accepting or rejecting
donations to your museum or
society graciously. He will
point out ways to reject a
potential gift from a donor you
really want to cultivate.
Depending on interest and the
size of the group he may also
include a tour of the CAAM
vault!
Our second speaker is Dr.
Christopher Jimenez y West,
Program Manager, History. Dr.
West will speak on the history
of CAAM and on exhibit planning,
from concept to opening. His
presentation will be applicable
to museums and societies of all
sizes. You will also have the
opportunity to see the current
exhibitions on “Allensworth: 100
Years of the California Dream”
and “Black Chrome”.
Following lunch we will have a
mini-tour of Los Angeles where
you will see the old and the
new, the new old and the old
new. See what happened to a
facility that was damaged in the
Northridge earthquake and what
became of a parking lot. The
highlight of our tour will be a
visit to the Los Angeles City
Archives and its collection of
minute books, other documents
and historic photographs.
Dinner will be held at the LAAC
and our speaker is Anna Sklar
the author of Brown Acres: An
Intimate History of the Los
Angeles Sewers. The book
involves politicians,
corruption, intrigue, and
environmentalists. It will be a
very interesting program and the
book will be available for
purchase.
The Board Meeting and Annual
Meeting of CCHS will be held on
Saturday morning followed by the
Awards Luncheon. There will a
tour of the Rare Books Room of
the Central Library following
the luncheon. This year at the
banquet we will have an
Installation ceremony and brief
remarks by the new president.
The main speaker, Dr. Merry
Ovnick, will present a program
on “Machine Politics, The City
of the Angels, and Wily
Reformers”..
The Conference has not met in
downtown Los Angeles in over 25
years and there have been many
changes to the skyline and the
neighborhoods. Join us for a
weekend of fellowship and
interesting programs. If you do
not want to drive consider
taking the train, AMTRAK or
Metrolink, to Union Station and
then catch a Redline Metrorail
to the Metro Center Station. The
Los Angeles Athletic Club is
just a few short blocks away.
Your colleagues from the Los
Angeles City Historical Society
look forward to meeting you as
we show you our little corner of
California!
